Now in its 27th year, the Smoky Mountain Brass Band continues to delight Western North Carolina audiences by performing concerts filled with great music—from pops to patriotic, orchestral favorites to big-band jazz, marches to beloved hymns.
Dr. John Entzi, director of bands at UNC-Asheville, is in his second year as conductor of the band. Entzi says, “The SMBB has a membership of brass and percussion players from around the region. They represent a number of different professions, but we all share a common passion of performing dynamic music with a dynamic ensemble. Several members are music educators, and many perform with orchestras, chamber ensembles and in many local churches.”
The 30-member British-style brass band has scheduled concerts throughout the region this spring, including appearances in Asheville, Weaverville, Waynesville and Highlands. Concerts will feature programs such as “Music From Around the World” and “Brass Band Pops,” as well as a memorial concert for founding SMBB member and Waynesville native Carol Underwood .
The SMBB will next perform on Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Haywood County Performing Arts Center, and on Sunday, March 8, at Trinity Methodist Church in West Asheville. Many of the band’s concerts are free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the door.
