To me, it’s amazing that Republicans can have the nerve to ridicule Obama for having been a community organizer. To me, it’s one of his best credentials and reveals that his heart is truly in helping the least powerful members of society. When I read his autobiography, Dreams from My Father—especially the chapters about his time as a neighborhood organizer in the South Side of Chicago—that was when I decided to work for his presidential campaign.
As an organizer, he didn’t get paid much and put in long hours. He met with poor and working-class people, listened to them, learned what issues mattered to them and worked hard to nurture their leadership—helping them to collectively bring about the social and economic justice that they so badly needed. Wouldn’t you like a president who would do that?
