Programs for children and teens at the YWCA of Asheville help to build a strong community through focusing on the next generation of leaders. Volunteers are essential in helping YWCA in its mission of “eliminating racism and empowering women.”
YWCA of Asheville is currently looking for tutors to work with children in grades K-6 in its after-school program. The YWCA After-School Program emphasizes respect for diversity, community involvement and academics. Tutors are asked to commit to working with the same student at least one day a week for one hour through May 1.
This kind of ongoing support means so much to the participating children, and the results can be seen in their academic performance. The next orientation for prospective tutors will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 5-6 p.m. at the YWCA. Future orientation dates and individualized orientations are also available.
“The YWCA is committed to closing the achievement gap in education. Because we emphasize homework help and tutoring in our after-school programs, our children consistently improve their grades,” says Catherine Peck, Director of Programs.
