We had quite a jolt reading [Jon Elliston’s] research on Camp Summerlane [“Cruel Summer” series, June 18 and 25, July 2 and 9 Xpress]. Thank you very much for [telling us] about that terrible attack on innocent youths, most of whom were wanting to go to a nonregimented camp.
The details and pictures from a variety of people [provided] a documentary for us to best understand why Rosman villagers would quickly become fearful and violent towards these young people. (A variation of Shirley Jackson’s theme of accepting the status quo in The Lottery.) May the readers of this series be able to question authority at any age.
The project must have taken months [in order] to locate the original participants from the town as well as several students, the latter who said they had positive learning experiences at camp.
Jon, you done good. Thank you.
