Xpress-rated: Video sneak peek at the Aug. 27 edition of Xpress

This week’s Mountain Xpress features a cover story about John Payne, the man who turned the Wedge Building into an influential spot for artists and for the revitalization of Asheville’s River District. Payne died last month. The cover story looks at his work and his influence.

There are also stories about the ongoing lawsuit between the city of Asheville and Buncombe County and the state of North Carolina regarding control of its water system; a recent lawsuit filed against the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office; plans to replace the members of the county’s planning board; and much more.

    but… lights and a real mike … PLEASE. The basics of video are really easy and really apparent when ignored.

    you got an excellent idea here though and I enjoy watching.

    I think we understand the basics of video. When it comes to a microphone and lights, here’s the rub: $$$. It would take an investment of about $2,000 to get a camera, microphone and lights for the production of a two-minute video. Is that kind of investment worth it? We’re weighing it…

    So right now, we’re using a Sony Handycam (model DCR-HC42) that does not have an input for an external microphone, and ambient light. That won’t be changing, at least for the near future.

  3. I understand your concerns, Jason … and I know and respect your level of expertise.

    The lighting can be solved for well under $100… If the Sony does not have mike input, that is a thornier problem… so, tell the publisher to budget about $900 for a really good HD cam and mike… then use http://exposureroom.com instead of YouTube and show us Jon in HD … well, okay, we can wait on that.

    Do you not think that the current YouTube production of this feature is apropos? Gives it a crunchier feel that is in perfect alignment with the “X” n’est ce pas?

    I wouldn’t change it at all. Seriously.
