Where will you hunt today?: The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has just posted an interactive set of maps at its Web site, www.ncwildlife.org, allowing users to search for and view information about state game lands in their neck of the woods. Enter your zip code, and like magic you can find out where and what you can hunt.
The site is most useful for “new hunters or hunters who are new to an area to help them locate what game lands are closest to them and what species are available to be hunted,” says Brad Gunn, the suitably named section manager of the agency’s Division of Wildlife Management.
Triple your pleasure: The popular triathlon at Biltmore Lake in Enka is back after a one-year absence.
Glory Hound Events has taken the show over with the blessing of the Biltmore Lake Association and will stage the Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake on June 14, 2008. Organizer Greg Duff says the new race “will capture the traditions of the old race while improving both the bike and run courses to minimize the impact on residents and improve the safety for the athletes.”
The event will be a sprint triathlon consisting of a 750-meter swim in Enka Lake, a 15.5-mile bike leg around the Enka area and a 3-mile run.
Registration for the race will open at 7 p.m. on January 3. Entries will only be accepted online (www.setupevents.com). Contact Duff at greg@gloryhoundevents.com with questions.
