What time is it?: It’s time for kids to run amok. Or close to it. Despite your best wishes, parents, school will soon be out. If the warmer months make your home feel like an air-conditioned prison and the ice-cream truck’s distant jingle has a sinister ring, you’ll be happy to know that Asheville Parks and Recreation has got your back. This summer, they’re offering a pile of “Outdoor Adventure Programs for Youth,” the ticket to physical activity and new friendships for your restless young’uns.
During three sessions of “Summer Adventure Camp,” kids 8-12 years old convene at Montford Recreation Center for programs including hiking, swimming, rafting, caving and camping, not to mention an overnight which is certain to feature s’mores.
For the younger among you (ages 6-9), the city is offering two sessions of an “Eco-Explorers Camp” to include hiking, climbing the Montford Wall, stream investigation (“Hey! A hellgrammite!”) and a field trip.
Teens make take a certain sullen interest in “Teen Adventure Camp,” which includes climbing at the Montford climbing wall, a challenge course, tubing, hiking, canoeing and whitewater rafting—sure to take their minds off acne and vitally needed changes to their MySpace profiles, if only for a spell.
Moreover, the city is offering a series of programs specifically for homeschoolers. For complete information – prices, times and registration details – contact Christen McNamara at 251-4029, e-mail outdoorprograms@ashevillenc.gov or visit ashevilleparks.org
