Probably because I grew up in a town where no one—not even people who are from there—ever visits, I never tire of playing tourist in Asheville. Maybe it’s weird, but I enjoy walking around in the Friday crowds with my camera in hand, trying to see down town through the eyes of someone just in for the weekend.
I see shopping. Lots of it.
Even though down town only covers a handful of blocks, there are enough shops to easily occupy a full afternoon, and—say what you will about gentrification—none of it could be found in a suburban mall.
Just today I wandered in to Woolworth Walk (25 Haywood St., 254-9234)—it’s a big draw for tourists, especially on a sunny, spring-like day when the doors are open and the soda fountain looks inviting. I have to admit, I was a little miffed when the Family Dollar store that used to occupy the old Woolworth building was replaced by the gallery, but as I took the time to walk around inside, I had to admit to myself that for an arts location it’s got a lot in common with it’s department store predecessor.
What I mean is, the various stalls run the gamut of shopping needs—fashion-wise, at least. You can’t buy toilet paper or nail polish at Woolworth Walk, but as a fashion merchandiser, the two-floor store hits the spot. And I’m not just talking from a tourist stand point.
Asheville locals will also do well to check out the Haywood St. gallery for great local designs. Hats, scarves, tees, dresses, lingerie, jewelry, decor … it’s there.
