Talk it out: Storytelling workshops and monthly events begin Jan. 24

A story slam is like a poetry slam only — and this is probably the obvious part — with stories rather than poems. The story is rated by the audience or a panel of judges, and prizes (or at least bragging rights) are at stake. To that end, Black Box Storytelling Theater presents two workshops led by Regi Carpenter, a professor of storytelling at Ithaca College.

Conscious Party: An animal affair

Full Circle Farm Sanctuary is holding a “FUNdraiser,” consisting of a night of libations, entertainment and prize drawings. Since autumn 2010, the animal sanctuary has been raising awareness of farmed animals and the conditions that they face, working to save abused, neglected and abandoned farmed animals in need.

Commissioners split vote on revised animal control ordinance

In a heated three-hour session that included pleas from opposite extremes during the public-comment period and one person getting thrown out of the chambers, the Buncombe County Board of Commissions voted 4-3, to approve changes to the county’s animal control ordinance.
