Asheville Council approves RAD Lofts incentives

Asheville City Council helped pave the way for major growth in the River Arts District Aug. 26, approving a roughly $764,000 incentive package for RAD Lofts. The mixed use development at the intersection of Roberts Street and Clingman Extension will include 209 apartments as well as 48,000 square-feet of commercial space and a parking garage.

Forty years of strengthening ‘Our Voice’

Our Voice began as an all-volunteer, grassroots endeavor in 1974, focused on crisis intervention and counseling referrals for survivors of sexual assault. Today a small staff and over 50 volunteers work to provide a 24-hour crisis line, counseling services, community outreach and youth programs. The organization will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Sept. 4.

Soul purpose: Local musicians unite for a quadruple album release

A label-defying spirit will be in full effect Friday, Aug. 29, at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall with the celebration of new albums by The Secret B-Sides, Reed, HoveyKraft and Slo_Gold. All four acts will perform original sets, as will legendary singer Sidney Barnes.

FEAST supplements the curriculum with garden-based education

Incorporating garden-based education with an emphasis on healthy eating into the regular curriculum is the goal of two in-school programs run by FEAST, an extension of Slow Foods Asheville. Funds gathered by FEAST and school PTOs will support faculty positions in two elementary schools this academic year where a FEAST Garden and Cooking Coordinator will work to bring the schools’ gardens into the classroom.
