More than 100 West Asheville residents meet to discuss ways to reduce neighborhood crime

More than 100 West Asheville residents crowded into a meeting hall on one of the hotter evenings of the year to hear reports from the Asheville Police Department and to talk to neighbors about what many felt has bee a rash of crimes in area, including several home invasions. The Asheville Police Department provided information about crime in general in the city, updates on ongoing investigations and tips for staying safe.

Sure, Council elections aren’t partisan, but there are many Democrats in Asheville, and five of the nine candidates vying for City Council seats made their pitches last night, Aug. 2, at a Young Democrats meet-and-greet. The event was the first of the campaign season to get multiple candidates at the same event.

Well, it’s all over but the prize-winner screening—and that’s tonight, Aug. 3 at 9:30 p.m. at Asheville Pizza and Brewing (675 Merrimon Ave.). Once again, Marcianne Miller, James Cassara and I were called in as judges for the 48 Hour Film Project. And once again, after a great deal of discussion—but only one threat of actual violence that I recall—we arrived at a consensus, resulting in the list of categories and films below.
