Last week may have been a little slack, but this week brings us three mainstream titles—Cowboys & Aliens (everywhere but the Beaucatcher), Crazy, Stupid, Love (everywhere but the Carmike) and The Smurfs (again, everywhere but the Carmike). Then there’s one art title—Page One: Inside the New York Times (at The Carolina)—and something or other called Assassination Games that promises the return of Jean-Claude Van Damme (also at The Carolina). People in search of something other than Bele Chere—or wanting to get out of the heat of Bele Chere—are not wanting for options.
The GOP’s controversial congressional redistricting proposal passed the North Carolina Senate along party lines July 25. The plan shifts almost all of Asheville’s reliably Democratic voters from the 11th District, currently represented by Democrat Heath Shuler, to the conservative 10th, presently the domain of Republican Patrick McHenry.
If the agenda for tonight’s Asheville City Council meeting is any indicator, things could move along quickly at City Hall. Council is expected to take up a conditional zoning request for a portion of a lot containing Trinity United Methodist Church at 587 Haywood Road in West Asheville, a resolution supporting the city being a co-applicant with the Asheville Housing Authority for a Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant, and a massive 19-item Consent Agenda
