Asheville area unemployment declined in April, among lowest in state

Driven by gains in the leisure and hospitality sector, Asheville metro area unemployment declined in April to 7.7 percent, down from 8.2 percent in March, according to numbers from the state Employment Security Commission. Buncombe County’s unemployment rate declined to 7.3 percent, the fifth-lowest in the state.

Asheville and other N.C. cities surrounded by countywide zoning would see their extraterritorial jurisdiction eliminated by legislation being considered on Thursday, June 2, in the Statehouse. And in counties without such zoning, ETJ residents could vote in some municipal elections — or run for office. In other business, the proposed Sunshine Amendment will also receive an unexpected second vote in committee. *UPDATED*

Tingles Cafe is closed

According to Lesley Groetsch, who owns Sazerac and Tingles with her husband, Jack, a financial business partner in Tingles has decided to close the restaurant. The restaurant is to be completely re-branded and will reopen soon under a different name.
