Town hall session tonight hopes to mind-meld Ashevilleans’ Google dreams
Ashevilleans dream big (as well as weird), so when Google announced its plans to hook one U.S. town up with superfast Internet connections, residents took note. The roots did it: Sewage cleanup under way at river park
Do you know where your waste goes after you flush it down the toilet? In the case of a 12-inch line that overflowed near the French Broad River Park on Sunday, it rushes downhill along Riverview Road on its way to a pumping station that carries it across the river. But on Sunday, that flow got interrupted, and citizen journalist Zen Sutherland snapped this photo of the nasties. Cleanup is under way, Metropolitan Sewerage District officials report. The problem? Probably a tree root.
Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler March 17-23: Polanski to the rescue?
OK, so last week was pretty grim, but there was a lot of it: Green Zone, Our Family Wedding, Remember Me, She’s Out of My League. (All are reviewed in this week’s Xpress.) Well, yes, there was The Girl on the Train and The White Ribbon, but almost no one went to see those. In fact, most people stuck with Alice in Wonderland. There are fewer titles this week, but most of them don’t look like they’re likely to be any better than last week’s crop. The notable exception is Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer, which opens Friday at the Fine Arts Theatre.
Rollin’ deep: A Blue Ridge Rollergirls photo gallery
Asheville’s hometown bruisers on wheels opened their season Saturday night, and photographer Jerry Nelson caught the action.
