***UPDATED TUESDAY, 11: 10 a.m.:*** A controversy has erupted after activist and blogger Jonas Phillips, a West Asheville resident, was arrested last Wednesday morning on charges of obstructing a sidewalk after he displayed a 5-by-1-foot sign reading “IMPEACH BUSH/ CHENEY” on the Haywood Road overpass.

Two recent high-profile local arrests, along with government surveillance under the PATRIOT Act are spurring a group of concerned citizens to hold a “Patriot Meeting” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the West Asheville Public Library (942 Haywood Road).

Today Asheville’s Sanitation Division got kudos for efforts to encourage recycling during the Bele Chere festival, which led to a vast improvement over last year’s recycling rate.
